Drax Group (Drax Power, Ltd) is a UK based energy company . The company is listed on the FTSE 250 Index on the London Stock Exchange . The company operates the Drax power station in the UK.

In particular, the company owns the coal-fired power station in Selby , North Yorkshire .

Company history

The first power plant complex was built in 1974. In November 1999, the US company AES Corporation bought Drax from National Power for £ 1.87 billion. Due to financial difficulties, AES transferred the Drax company to its lenders in August 2003. After failed sales talks with various international energy companies ( BHP Billiton , International Power , RWE and E.ON ), Drax Power Ltd was listed on the London Stock Exchange on December 15, 2005.

Corporate criticism for environmental pollution

In 2005, Drax produced 20.8 million tons of carbon dioxide . The newspaper The Times reported that emissions of carbon dioxide was higher than the value that would produce the 103 other nations. On August 31, 2006, over 600 people took part in a protest against carbon dioxide emissions from the power plant ("ReclaimPower"). 29 people were arrested during this protest, which was coordinated by the Camp for Climate Action organization. However, the company is now making efforts to reduce its environmental impact. Since September 2007, new, more efficient turbines supplied by Siemens Power Generation (PG) have been in use for this purpose. A power plant built by Alstom that works with biomass has been in operation since May 2008. The emission of carbon dioxide is thus further reduced.
