Three blacksmiths
The statue Drei Schmiede stands in the city center of Helsinki on Kolmen sepän aukio (German three-forge square) on Mannerheimintie at the Aleksanterinkatu junction (Swedish: Alexandersgatan, often simply: Aleksi) opposite the Stockmann department store . It was built in 1932 by Felix Nylund .
The upper part of the bronze statue stands on a granite base and shows three naked men at an anvil. This round base bears the Latin text
“Monumentum - curavit - legatum - j. tallbergianum - pro helsingfors ad mcmxxxii ”
"This statue was erected with the help of J. Tallberg from Pro Helsingfors in 1932"
The Pro Helsingfors Foundation had received the statue of the merchant Julius Tallberg , whose department store was at the northern end of the square, as a donation.
During the Continuation War , the statue was damaged by bomb fragments in 1944, which can still be seen today. Today the statue is a popular meeting place, the square is free of ice for a long time, even in winter, because there is a heating system below the Aleksanterinkatu that keeps the street free of snow and ice even at temperatures of down to −10 ° C. The heat comes from the district heating water draining off the surrounding buildings. So you can sit at this statue outdoors even in winter.
A plaster model of the statue is in the academy library. During the Christmas season, the statues are often decorated with Christmas hats.
