Felix Arthur Nylund (born May 15, 1878 in Korpo , † December 23, 1940 in Kauniainen ) was a Finnish-Swedish sculptor . His best-known work, the sculpture Drei Schmiede , is located in Helsinki city center on Kolmen sepän aukio (German three-forge square) on Mannerheimintie at the Aleksanterinkatu junction (Swedish: Alexandersgatan, often simply: Aleksi) opposite the Stockmann department store .

life and work

Nylund was already carving ornaments in his youth. He began his artistic training in 1895 at the drawing school under the direction of Victor Westerholm and continued it under the direction of Wilhelm Bissen at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen from 1899 to 1901 and at the Académie Colarossi in Paris from 1901 to 1906. Nylund also made study trips to France and Italy. Originally he was inspired by Franco-Scandinavian classicism, but later his style also acquired elements found in Greek and Egyptian sculptures. For this he used more solid materials and created particularly massive male granite sculptures. This makes him a representative of newer Finnish sculpture.

Nylund lived in Copenhagen for a long time in the early 1900s and returned to Finland in 1924. He was a co-founder of the Finnish Association of Sculptors (Suomen Kuvanveistäjäliitto) and its chairman from 1910 to 1912 and between 1924 and 1932. Nylund was the last teacher in the school's Fine Arts Association from 1935 to 1940.

Nylund's most famous sculpture in central Helsinki was unveiled in December 1932. He also worked as a coin designer and painted some pictures.
