The three babblers

The Drei Schwätzer are a bronze sculpture created by Karl-Henning Seemann in the central Hessian city of Gießen . You are in the inner-city pedestrian zone at the confluence of Plockstrasse and Seltersweg.

The work of art was donated by the Volksbank Gießen (today Volksbank Mittelhessen ) on the occasion of the celebrations of its 125th anniversary and on September 5, 1983, the unveiling took place in the presence of Mayor Hans Görnert ( CDU ). Seemann's intention was to use the sculpture to symbolize people from home who are having a conversation - not an argument, but a normal conversation that develops every day between citizens in the city center. The trio received mostly very positive feedback. In the early years, passers-by gave the babblers from time to time hats, glasses and shopping bags and put cigarettes in their mouths or newspapers or bags of potato chips under their arms. Over the years, they have seen several strokes of color, but in the meantime they have developed into a symbol of the city and a popular meeting place.

Between April 1991 and January 2011, Willi Rüspeler gave the three of them a voice in his weekly column Die drei Schwätzer mein Today in the Gießener Anzeiger and let the characters he named Mariechen, Waldemar and Justus comment on current city events, sometimes mockingly, sometimes ironically in short sequences of images. In addition, the street art competition "Gießener Schwätzer", named after the sculpture, took place in Gießen between 2001 and 2004 .
