Volksbank Mittelhessen eG, founded in 1858 as Gewerbebank Gießen , is one of the largest cooperative banks after numerous mergers with a total of 164 originally independent banks in recent years.

In 1858 craftsmen, citizens and merchants founded the Gewerbebank Gießen , in 1861 the Gewerbebank Marburg was founded , in 1863 that of the Bad Nauheimers. After burglaries during and after the First and Second World War, more branches were opened again in the late 1950s. The first mergers with smaller credit companies occurred in the 1970s. In 2003 the Volksbank Gießen-Friedberg emerged from the Volksbank Gießen and the Wetterauer Volksbank . Two years later, today's Volksbank Mittelhessen emerged from the merger with Marburger Bank . On February 26, 2009, the management and supervisory boards of Volksbank Mittelhessen eG and Volksbank Wetzlar-Weilburg eG announced that they would propose the merger retrospectively to December 31, 2008 to the representatives' meetings. On April 3, 2009, the general assembly of Volksbank Holzheim decided with 95.73 percent, also retroactively to January 1, 2009, to merge with Volksbank Mittelhessen eG. In 2019, the merger with Raiffeisenbank eG with its headquarters in Ebsdorfergrund - Dreihausen took place.

In 2011 Volksbank Mittelhessen became the first bank to become a microfinance institute of the Microcredit Fund Germany .
