The Dresden Gas GmbH (DG) was in the years 1991 to 1997 for the gas supply in the city of Dresden in charge. The company, which was founded on June 28, 1991, emerged from the VEB Energiekombinat Dresden by splitting off the gas activities and splitting them into the city supply (Dresden Gas) and the supply of the region (GASO, gas supply Saxony East ).

history

In 1990 the gas supply to Dresden was reorganized. An agreement between the city of Dresden and Ruhrgas AG from December 1990 provided for the establishment of a GmbH by Technischen Werke Dresden and Ruhrgas AG for gas supply in the area of the city of Dresden. Technischen Werke Dresden GmbH held 51% and Ruhrgas AG 49% of the company's share capital. Ruhrgas secured the right to transfer part of its business share to other gas supply companies. This was done against the background of antitrust law considerations.

The founding shareholders of Dresden Gas GmbH were:

  • Technische Werke Dresden GmbH: 51.0%
  • Ruhrgas AG: 19.5%
  • GEW gas, electricity and waterworks Cologne AG: 19.5%
  • GESO agency for Sachsen Ost AG: 10.0%

In July 1991, Technische Werke Dresden GmbH and the Treuhandanstalt signed the purchase agreement for the city of Dresden's gas assets, and the agreement was carried out as agreed. The company's first managing directors were Ralph Reinsperger, managing directors of Technische Werke Dresden, Otto Schmitz and Karl Kunterding. After Ralph Reinsperger left and Otto Schmitz left, Arno Reintjes became managing director of Dresden Gas GmbH and Stefan Richtstein was appointed commercial officer. The company was based on the site of the former Reick gas works .

The supervisory board was headed by Peter Czerney , First Mayor of Dresden (approx. Five-year term of office). His deputy was Friedrich Späth . The company was based in the company's buildings on the Gasanstaltstrasse site in Dresden-Reick .

Conversion to natural gas

The conversion of the city of Dresden from town gas to natural gas was a defining factor in the work of Dresden Gas . In December 1990 work on the conversion planning was started and market analyzes were carried out. For the necessary remediation of contaminated sites, which cost several million DM, the Treuhandanstalt had promised a cost sharing of up to 90%. A total of 30,000 customers had to be converted. Due to the increased demand for natural gas, Verbundnetz Gas AG built a natural gas pipeline from the Freiberg area to the city limits of Dresden with an investment volume of DM 50 million. The new transfer stations (network interconnection points) Rippien, Kaditz, Lockwitzgrund, Meusslitz and Söbrigen were built in Dresden. After completing the preparatory work, the Lord Mayor of Dresden gave the go-ahead for the changeover on February 3, 1992 by lighting the first natural gas torch for Dresden. Up to the beginning of 1995, up to 2,000 households were able to be converted every week.

Economic situation

Due to the natural gas conversion and the substantial replacement and expansion investments in the city area, the company realized considerable losses in the first few years of 32 million DM (1992), 28 million DM (1993), 30 million DM (1994) and 15 million DM (1995).

The company grew rapidly due to the natural gas switch. In 1992 alone, gas sales rose by 70% to 1,091 GWh in 1993.

Termination of activities

In 1997, as part of a restructuring, Dresden Gas GmbH was merged with DEF Dresdner Elektrizitäts- und Fernwärmeversorgung GmbH. Since then, the company has operated as DREWAG - Stadtwerke Dresden GmbH .
