Dreynschlag is the exhibition group of the association of "Liechtenauer Fechter," which started its research in 1997 and organized itself in October 1998 as an official association. The name is an artificial word and is derived from a quote from Johannes Liechtenauer that reads "Haw strong and firm dreyn" .

The association was founded by Christoph Kaindel, Walter Engel and Oliver Walter and originally served the practical testing of theoretically acquired knowledge for Christoph Kaindel's master's thesis on European martial arts in the Middle Ages.

In the course of this work, Christoph Kaindel has Fechtbuch of Sigmund Ringeck from Early NHG into today's German , translated to give yourself and Dreynschlag better study basis. This translation and the revision by Jörg Bellinghausen is still the basis for all Ringeck books today.

The “Liechtenauer Fechter” have set themselves the goal of reviving the medieval art of fencing , more precisely the fencing of the German school of the 15th century , and for this reason they became members of the HEMAC in 2001 and founded them in 2003 together with two other associations the Austrian Professional Association for Historical Fencing.

Dreynschlag have already made many appearances in the course of their meanwhile fifteen years of existence, including at the Kaltenberg knight tournament . But Dreynschlag also takes the educational mandate very seriously. For example, since 2004 there have been performances in the court hunt and armory of the Neue Burg as part of the “Long Night of Museums” in Vienna . Dreynschlag has also been invited several times by the University of Vienna and several schools in the city of Vienna to share her knowledge of medieval history and fencing with others.

Since the fencing scene has developed more and more throughout Europe since 1997 and more and more events are being organized, Dreynschlag has also organized one of the largest events in the world in Vienna every year since 2003, where around 200 participants from all over the world can be welcomed. On the other hand, Dreynschlag members are often invited to other events as seminar leaders.

In 2010 the Dreynschlag group consists of 37 members and, in addition to historical fencing and exhibition fighting, also deals with re-enactment , i.e. H. the most faithful representation of historical epochs, in this case the late Middle Ages from 1460 to 1470. The representation of the members of Dreynschlag is limited to members of the peasant and bourgeois classes. As such, they are medieval markets as "propelled fencing school" go and entertain the audience with spontaneous fencing performances in the style of fencing schools of the 15th century.

The group itself trains for this 2–3 times a week for 2.5–3 hours and currently has 4 trainers. The focus is on training with the " long sword ". But all other aspects of the German school are also popular here, such as wrestling , dagger fighting , long knives and polearms such as lance or murder ax .
