Drimnagh Castle

Drimnagh Castle ( Irish Caisleán Dhroimeanaigh ) is a Norman castle in Drimnagh , a suburb of the Irish capital Dublin . It is the only surviving castle in Ireland to have a moat fed by a small river called the Bluebell . The Drimnagh Castle Christian Brothers School is close to the property.

history

The earliest recorded owner of Drimnagh Castle was Sir Hugh de Bernival in 1216. His family, who owned Drimnagh Castle for many centuries, was later called Barnewall . The last residents of Drimnagh Castle were the Hatch family .

In the beginning of the 20th century, Joseph Hatch (* 1851), a dairy owner who lived at 6 Lower Leeson Street , bought the castle. Joe Hatch served on the Dublin City Council from 1895-1907; his constituency was the Fitzwilliam Ward . He bought the castle primarily to get pastureland for his cattle. He had the castle restored and it became a summer home for his family and a shining place to celebrate the silver wedding of Joseph Hatch and his wife Mary , née. Connell , and also for the wedding of the eldest daughter, Mary , in 1910.

After his death in April 1918, the castle fell to the couple's eldest son, Joseph Aloisius Hatch (* 1882) and called "Louis". Together with his brother `` Hugh '' Louis ran the farm and dairy on Lower Leeson Street. Louis was never married and died in December 1951. Hugh, who had only married in 1944 at the age of 60, died in 1950.

Louis Hatch bequeathed the castle to Dr. Father Dunne , Bishop of Nara , who sold them (allegedly for a symbolic price) to the Christian Brothers so that they could set up the school that is there today.

At first the brothers lived there and ran a school until 1956. Then they moved to their new monastery with a school nearby. In the mid-1980s, Drimnagh Castle was a ruin with collapsed roofs, missing windows and partially collapsed masonry.

In 1978 the local Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club took over the castle's coach house and renovated it as a clubhouse to include a meeting hall, kitchen, and changing rooms with adjoining shower rooms.

In 1986, Peter Pearson , a well-known artist with An Taisce , the National Trust of Ireland, established a local committee and managed to get Foras Áiseanna Saothair (FÁS), the state training administration, to participate in a rescue and restoration project. All work was done by hand: the construction of the oak roof over the knight's hall from the 15th century, coupled windows , lime mortar for building blocks and plastering and carvings in oak. A formal 17th century style garden was also created.

In 1996 the work program ended, even if the castle was far from being completely restored.

Today public tours are offered and the castle can be rented as a location for weddings and other events. Courses in drywall construction are also held there .

The buildings within the moat consist of a knight's hall from the 15th century, an attached tower from the 16th century, a large stone building from the beginning of the 20th century, which was used as a stable and once as a ballroom, and a coach house.
