Drogo (Vexin)
Drogo (French: Dreux ; † 1035 in Nicaea ) was a count of Vexin , Amiens and Mantes in the 11th century. He was a son of Count Walter II the White .
Drogo cultivated a close friendship with the neighboring Norman Duke Robert I the Magnificent . Before 1025 he married the Anglo-Saxon princess Godgifu (Goda), who was a daughter of King Æthelred of Wessex and a cousin of the Duke. The Anglo-Saxon royal family had been in Norman exile since Sven Gabelbart's Danes landed on the British Isles in 1013 . The marriage produced three sons:
- Ralf the Fearful († 1057), Earl of Hereford
- Walter III. († 1063), Count of Vexin, Amiens and Mantes
- Fulko († after 1077), Bishop of Amiens
In 1035 Drogo joined Duke Robert I on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He died with him on the way in Nicaea. As Ordericus Vitalis reports, in 1087 William the Conqueror made a claim to the Vexin, which in the meantime belonged to the French crown domain , due to its relationship with Count Drogo. The dispute over the Vexin was a major point of conflict between the dukes of Normandy and the kings of France throughout the 12th century. His widow married Eustach II of Boulogne
