Drown is a funeral doom band founded as Slow in 2012 and renamed in 2019 .

history

Drown is a one-man funeral doom project run by Markov Soroka. The Ukrainian-born musician who lives in Portland and is known for Tchornobog , Aureole and Krukh , among others , founded the band as Slow in 2012. Under this band name he released the album Unsleep in 2014 on Black Plague Records and in 2017 the single Mother Cetacean . He then ended the project Slow. In 2019, however, he picked up the single track again to present it as part of the album Subaqueous , released as Drown, and released the album Unsleep again under the new name. The Prohpecy Productions subcontractor Lupus Lounge supported Soroka as a new contractual partner . Subaqueous in particular was widely received and praised.

concept

Drown is a concept band that lyrically and tonally deals with the process of drowning. Unsleep tells "in five pieces the story of a man who drowns himself, whereupon his body and soul float forever in the depths of the sea." According to Prophecy Productions, Drown can be understood as "a kind of musical theater". Soroka describes the content orientation on “The Motive of Drowning” as “a metaphor as well as a construct”, which should create a connection between the work and the recipient on the basis of a generalizable suffering. This suffering arises “from various forms of sadness and depression that are accompanied by a feeling of loss”.

style

With reference to the conceptual framework, Soroka describes the music of the project as "Auqatic Doom". Musically, however, Drown is seen as a representative of Funeral Doom .

In relation to other representatives of the genre, the pace is perceived as "kept dynamic and [...] a little faster". In addition, the music acts melodiously with an "interplay of calm and fast double-bass emphasized passages". The vocals are presented as a sustained growling , while other elements such as violins, effects and sampling complement the overall sound.

“With its monstrous growls and sluggish drum rhythms, the record resembles an all-consuming maelstrom, while the oppressive, drawn-out leads and desolate clean guitars as well as the dreary violins that complete the two tracks depict the strange deep-sea scenery slumbering beneath the surface . Especially on "VI: Mother Cetacean" there is something fascinatingly unreal about the blurry guitar melodies, which means that the atmosphere of the album is completely absorbed in its underwater setting.
