Drudel
The Drudel is a picture puzzle in which what is depicted must be read from a drawing , the depiction often using an unusual or extreme perspective or an extreme section.
Example: a box in which two parallel, oblique lines are drawn; spots can be seen between the lines. Solution: a giraffe walking past a window (box = window, oblique lines = neck of the giraffe).
history
The original Drudel concept was invented by the American author , illustrator and publisher Roger Price , who published his first Drudel in 1950 in a book called Droodle .
Price had previously worked as a writer on television series. After the creation of the Drudel, he also invented the Mad Libs , popular in the Anglo-Saxon-speaking area since the 1950s, together with Leonard Stern . It's about fill-in-the-blank fill in words to create a nonsensical, hopefully funny and usually a bit strange story. The commercial success of this work led to the establishment of the Price-Stern-Sloan publishing house .
One of Price's original drudels with a large inclined triangle and a small triangle served as the cover for Frank Zappa's 1982 album Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch ( ship arriving too late to save a drowning witch ).
Precursors are especially picture puzzles of the 17th century, which go back to drawings by Annibale Carracci . The lines are extremely reduced and simple, but they work completely in the spirit of Roger Price.
Word derivation
The word Drudel is the Germanized form of the legally protected English made-up word droodle , a suitcase word which was formed from the components doodle for "scribble" and riddle for "riddle". So a drudel is a scribble puzzle.
