Drummuir Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Drummuir Castle is a mansion in the Scottish village of Drummuir in the Council Area Moray . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrading to the highest monument category A took place in 1988. Of the numerous outer buildings, the manor and the gatehouse are protected separately as category B buildings.

history

The owner of the mansion was the Admiral Archibald Duff . He had the building constructed between 1846 and 1847 at a total cost of around £ 10,000. The Scottish architect Thomas MacKenzie, who lives in nearby Elgin , is responsible for the design . Alexander Reid was entrusted with a revision in 1865 .

The manor was only built in 1858. William Bruce revised an original plan by William Smith before construction. Originally classified as a category C structure, the manor was upgraded to monument category B in 1998.

The gatehouse was built in 1897. It is possible that Alexander Reid, who died in March of the same year, provided the design.

description

Drummuir Castle stands in the middle of a large estate about a kilometer west of Drummuir on the opposite bank of the Isla . The manor house with corner tours is designed like a castle. It shows various Tudor Gothic motifs in the form of Tudor arches and tracery . The interiors are elaborately designed. The octagonal vestibule shows strong parallels to that of Taymouth Castle .

grange

The estate, located 300 meters northeast of the manor house, consists of four elongated buildings that enclose an inner courtyard on all sides. The two-storey building is designed in the Scottish Baronial style . Its facades are plastered with Harl , with natural stone surrounds. Both on the southwest and on the southeast side lead round-arched doorways of the courtyard. Pigeon houses are set up above it . A round tower with a conical roof emerges on the southern edge . All roofs are covered with slate. The gables are designed as a stepped gable .

Gatehouse

The gatehouse, located around 500 meters northeast of the manor, flanks the gateway of the main access road to Drummuir Castle. The one-story building is crenellated like a castle. The two-story octagonal tower protruding from the facade on the street side is striking. The gatehouse closes with a slate hipped roof . The gate pillars with their pyramidal caps are preserved, but no longer support a gate.
