Drumtroddan (also Drumtrodden) in Wigtownshire is the location of a row of stones and some cup-and-ring markings at Drumtroddan Farm, eight miles southwest of Wigtown near Port William in Scotland .

The row of stones

Of the three between 2000 and 1000 BC Set up menhirs ( English Standing Stones ) from Drumtroddan only one stands, while the other two have fallen over. It is unknown whether the people who erected the stones were the same as those who made the cup-and-ring markings 400 m northwest and probably earlier on an outcrop .

Drumtroddan's row of stones was about 13 meters long. The largest and south-western (recently fallen) stone had been crooked for a long time, was about 3.1 m high and has a cross-section of 1.2 × 0.3 m. The northeastern menhir is about 3.0 m high and has a cross section of 0.9 × 0.3 m and is vertical. The third stone, between the two, fell on its broadside a long time ago.

Early records show that there were originally four stones facing northeast-southwest, but all traces of the fourth have disappeared. In the absence of other ideas, reference is made to a religious or astronomical meaning of the stones.

Rock art at Drumtroddan

Drumtroddan is only one of the many outcrops of the Grauwacke of the area, which was provided with petroglyphs or hierograms about 4000 years ago . The markings inside fences consist of concave round and oval depressions (cups) with a diameter of a few centimeters that are pecked into the surface. Some cups are surrounded by concentric circles, the "rings", of which Drumtroddan has a diameter of 70 cm in one case. Sometimes a linear channel runs from the center of the bowl through the rings outwards.
