Port William is a town in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is located around 17 kilometers southwest of Wigtown on the Machars peninsula on the east bank of Luce Bay . Historically Port William was in the traditional county of Wigtownshire .

history

Port William is named after William Maxwell, 3rd Baronet , who built the village around 1770 as a planned settlement . The Maxwell Baronets owned large estates in the area with their ancestral seats Old Place of Monreith , Myrton Castle and Monreith House . To enable maritime trade, the coastal town was equipped with port facilities. With the booming trade, a customs office was added in 1788. Much of the goods handled were crops that were shipped to England. Today the port has practically no economic importance and is used by fishing boats and private boats.

While 884 people lived in Port William in 1861, the number of inhabitants fell steadily until 462 in 1991. Since then, there has been an increase to 523 in 2011.

traffic

The A747 ( Glasserton - Glenluce ) forms the main road Port Williams and connects the village to the trunk road network. Furthermore, the B7085 from Wigtown joins .
