Gerhard Roselt (born September 9, 1915 in Wöllnitz ; † March 31, 2000 in Ilmenau ) was a German paleobotanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Roselt ".

Life

Roselt was initially in the merchant navy and after military service in World War II studied biology and geography at the University of Jena from 1947 with a diploma in biology in 1952. He then worked at the paleobotany and coal science department of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin and was there in 1954 Walther Gothan is doing his doctorate. He was private lecturer for paleobotany in Jena and from 1960 lecturer and from 1963 professor for paleobotany and coal geology at the Bergakademie Freiberg and from 1963 head of the Institute for Fuel Geology. In 1981 he retired and lived in Ilmenau.

He worked on the fossil plants of the Lettenkeuper from the Rühle von Lilienstern collection , dealt with coniferous blossoms, the structure of mineralized plant parts and coal geology. As part of the International Commission for Coal Petrology, he worked on the preparation of the International Lexicon for Coal Petrology (ILKP).

In 1988 he published a study of the so-called Freiberg coal skull, a brown coal relic (Miocene, Bohemia) in the form of a skull, which, according to Roselt, is a forgery by the first owner in the 19th century, a pharmacist named Löscher.
