Jafar ibn Abī Tālib ( Arabic جعفر بن أبي طالب, DMG Ǧaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib ; * approx. 590 ; † 629 ), also Dschafer ut-Tayyar , was a companion and cousin of the Islamic prophet Mohammed . He was the older brother of ʿAlī ibn Abī Tālibs and son of Abū Tālib ibn ʿAbd al-Muttalibs .

Jafar ibn Abī Tālib was one of the first 24 to 32 converts to Islam, depending on the count. In 615 he led a group of more than 80 Muslims on their temporary emigration to Abyssinia , where he recited Quranic verses about Mary and Jesus to the Negus Aschama ibn Abdjar , whereupon the latter promised his protection after a Korean delegation from the Negus had demanded the arrest of the emigrants .

Jafar did not return to Arabia ( Medina ) until several years later and met Mohammed shortly after the conquest of Chaibar in 628. In 629 he was killed in the battle of Muʿta against the Byzantines.

Jafar was married to Asma bint Umais and had three sons: ʿAwn, Muhammad and ʿAbdallah.
