The city of Jargalant ( Mongolian Жаргалант ) is located in northern Mongolia in the province (Aimag) Chöwsgöl . It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name ( Sum ). The official name of the city, Orgil (Mongolian Оргил ), is not known to many Mongolians, as in Mongolia the name of the county seat is usually identical to the name of Sum, of which there are 331 in Mongolia.

location and size

The 2549 km² Sum Jargalant had 5183 inhabitants (mainly Chalcha ) in 2009 , of which 1315 lived in the city of Jargalant. Quite a few of the residents live in yurts . The city is 172 km southeast of Mörön , the capital of the aimags Chöwsgöl, and 886 km northwest of Ulaanbaatar . Not far from the city flows the Ider , with a length of 452 km the eighth longest river in Mongolia.

Like many other places in Mongolia, Jargalant can only be reached via slopes and not via an asphalt road. Not far from the city, a wooden bridge built in 1940 leads over the Ider. Vehicles used to transport people are only allowed to pass them without their passengers; passengers cross the bridge on foot. A concrete bridge is currently (2011) under construction.

Attractions

Öndör Gongor (Өндөр Гонгор)
  • In addition to stuffed animals and sacred objects, the museum also has photos of Öndör Gongor (Өндөр Гонгор), a man of extraordinary height who came from Jargalant and lived around 1880–1930. The name literally means "The high Gongor". Its size is given on the one hand with 2.36 m, on the other hand with 2.45 m or 2.63 m.
  • Also worth seeing is the Jargalantiin Dugan monastery, founded in 1890.
  • A few kilometers north of the city is on the road to Moron a 3-meter-high stupa made of granite worth seeing, in 1890 by the monk Gelenkhüü was built. Numerous legends entwine around the person of the joint hüü (1870–1937), who also came from the Jargalant area. He provided u. a. He caused a sensation through his attempts to fly with wings made of sheepskin he designed himself, for which he was erected a monument at the airport of the provincial capital Mörön.

Infrastructure

As a district town in which various authorities are based, Jargalant has two hotels, schools, a kindergarten and a health and maternity ward. Various shops serve to cover daily needs. A few kilometers east of the city there is also a yurt camp for tourists.
