The Dschumati convent ( Georgian ჯუმათის მონასტერი ) is a medieval Georgian-orthodox convent in Georgia , in the region Gurien in which ozurgeti municipality . It is located in the village of Djirijumati, in the Supsa Valley, and is 14 kilometers away from the city of Osurgeti . Jumati used to be the center of the diocese, but today it belongs to the Shemokmedi diocese .
The monastery consists of a church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel , a bell tower, wall and the other monastic buildings. The church is a basilica . The construction time is not known. The Georgian scientist Dimitri Bakradze thinks that the Jumati Monastery was founded and built earlier than the Shemokmedi Monastery . The fresco painting dates from the 16th to 18th centuries. The church was renovated in 1847 and the bell tower was built in 1904. It has a square floor plan, six windows and is made of stone. Today it is partially destroyed.
The Jumati Monastery was not only a religious but an important cultural center of Guria . It was known through several relics kept here, such as particularly valuable icons, historical documents and others. These relics and documents often had a secular meaning. In the 20th century, the Jumati monastery was robbed several times. Already in 1924 almost none of the relics were left. A golden icon of St. George was particularly important . It came from the 11th or 12th century and was lost during a robbery in 1921. There are only two fragments that are now kept in the Hermitage .
