The Deutsches Ärzteblatt , founded in 1872, is an official body of the medical profession and is published by the Bundesärztekammer (working group of the German medical associations) and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians . It appears in Deutsches Ärzte-Verlag GmbH (founded in 1949) in Cologne and is the publication with the highest circulation. The editorial team designed the periodical in Berlin.

The Deutsches Ärzteblatt is sent to all doctors in Germany and is by far the medical journal with the highest circulation in Germany (around 352,000 copies sold per week in the 4th quarter of 2014).

The Deutsches Ärzteblatt claims that it finances itself exclusively through advertisements and not through the doctors' chamber contributions. In addition to technical overview articles and original works, it also contains information on professional politics . The Ärzteblatt also acts as the organizer of congresses and professional fairs.

The issues can be accessed online back to 1996. Since 2008, the articles have also been published in English in the online journal Deutsches Ärzteblatt International .

Since 2002 the so-called PP edition of the Deutsches Ärzteblatt has also been published with 12 issues per year. Its full title is: Deutsches Ärzteblatt for Psychological Psychotherapists and Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists . According to the publisher, the widespread circulation in 2016 was a good 23,000 copies. It is also an official organ of the German Medical Association and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. The booklets are available online from the first issue.

History

The Ärzteblatt was called the Ärztliches Vereinsblatt until 1930 . It started on September 2, 1872 with a print run of 750 copies. Six years later there were already 6,000 subscribers, which was about half of the German medical profession. From 1893 the frequency was biweekly, from 1907 weekly. In 1916 Siegmund Vollmann took over the editing of the newspaper. He is considered to be the central figure who firmly anchored the paper in the forest of leaves of the German Reich and, after many changes of publishing house, had it published by the German Association of Doctors' Association , that is to say in self-publishing. In an article in 1930, Vollmann took on progressive doctors who denounced the connection between tuberculosis and poverty in the Dresden hygiene exhibition . He thought this was "superfluous class bitterness". When the National Socialists came to power in 1933 , Vollmann had to leave the editorial office as a Jew. The Reichsärztekammer merged the German Medical Journal with the medical communications of the Hartmannbund , bringing it into line with the Nazi regime .
