The Dubbele Wiericke (also called Grote Wiericke ) is a canal in the Dutch provinces of South Holland and Utrecht . The canal was dug in 1360 to divert excess water from the Oude Rijns into the Hollandse IJssel and is now used as a shipping link between these two rivers. The Dubbele Wiericke runs from Nieuwerbrug via Driebruggen to Hekendorp and has a length of 8 km.

The canal was part of the Dutch Waterline , a defense system in which a number of rivers and canals could be used for defensive purposes for inundation ( inundation ).

Enkele Wiericke runs parallel to Dubbele Wiericke . The Lange Ruige Weide green area is located between the two canals .

On the east side of the Dubbele Wiericke there is a hiking trail, part of the so-called Wierickeroute . A bridge on the A12 motorway leads over the Dubbele Wiericke. Hikers and walkers have the opportunity to pass the motorway there.
