Dublure (French "doublure") is a term from the cover decoration and replaces the term mirror if the inside of the front or back cover is not made of simple paper or fabric, but is covered and richly decorated like the outside.

The first bindings with duplicates come from the oriental area. As early as the 14th century, the insides of the lids were discovered on both Egyptian-Syrian and Persian-Turkish bindings as an additional decorative surface. From the end of the 15th century, the phenomenon first spread to Hungarian and Venetian, and a little later to all Italian bindings. The representations were usually based on the external ornamentation, characteristic decorative elements were the ribbon work and continuous arabesque borders . In the 17th century the duplicate appeared in France as well. Here, however, she was often the sole bearer of jewelry, while the rest of the binding was kept simple. The most popular forms of jewelry were leather mosaics and hand gilding . In Germany, decoration on the inside remained the exception. The Berlin bookbinding family Lehmann took over the suggestion from neighboring countries in the 18th century. Likewise, the Würzburg University Buchbinder made Francis of Paula Schwerdtlen 1812 as his master work a red morocco for deluxe edition of Becanus' Serenissimi principis Ferdinandi Hispaniorum infantis ... triumphalis introitus in ... Gandavum 1636 (with a beautiful inlaid Doublüre of different-colored leather Color Plate. XV in imitation, folding and Onion fish , see below) Today the duplicate has become rare, only the inner edges are sometimes still decorated.
