Otto Mazal

Otto Mazal (born July 26, 1932 in Vienna ; † June 23, 2008 ibid) was an Austrian librarian and Byzantinist as well as director of the manuscript and incunabula collection of the Austrian National Library .

Life

Between 1950 and 1955 he studied Classical Philology at the University of Vienna , which he completed with a doctorate sub auspiciis . From 1956 to 1992 he worked at the collection of manuscripts and incunabula of the Austrian National Library, where he was director from 1970 to 1992. In 1968 he received his habilitation in Byzantine Studies at the University of Vienna. From then on, he worked there as a university lecturer at the Institute for Byzantine and Neo-Greek Studies. He was a corresponding member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Mazal has written over 160 independent publications and specialist articles as well as at least 89 articles for specialist dictionaries. He was a co-founder of the Codices Manuscripti magazine .

Otto Mazal was buried at the Ober Sankt Veiter Friedhof in Vienna.

Otto Mazal was married and had three children. Since 1950 he was a member of the Catholic student association KÖStV Austria Vienna in the ÖCV .

  • Awarded the professional title of extraordinary university professor by the Federal President in 1976 (based on the resolution of the Federal President in Federal Law Gazette II No. 49/2008, the professional title of university professor has been allowed to be used since February 2008 )
