Ernst Gamillscheg (born August 6, 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian Byzantinist , palaeographer and librarian .

Gamillscheg studied Byzantine Studies and History of the Middle Ages. After receiving his doctorate in 1974, he was assistant at the Institute for Byzantine and Neo-Greek Studies at the University of Vienna from 1975 to 1984 and from 1985 to 1992 head of the specialist library for Byzantine and Neo-Greek Studies at the University Library of Vienna . In 1990 he completed his habilitation in Byzantine Studies at the University of Vienna. From 1993 to 2007 he was director of the manuscript, autograph and estate collection of the Austrian National Library . Gamillscheg is active in research and teaching in the field of book history and especially Greek palaeography and has organized exhibitions at the Austrian National Library.
