Werner Seibt (Byzantinist)

Werner Seibt (born July 6, 1942 in Senftenberg ) is an Austrian Byzantinist .

Life

He attended the school brothers' secondary school in the Strebersdorf district of Vienna . From 1960 he studied classical studies in a very broad sense; In 1969 he was promoted to Dr. phil. (The majesty trials before the Senate Court under Tiberius) in Ancient History and Classical Philology, in 1970 he passed the teaching examination in Latin and did his military service . In the 1970s he completed his Byzantine studies.

From 1971 to 1978 he worked as a research assistant at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Commission for Byzantine Studies ) with the creation of a catalog of the Byzantine seals in Austria.

In 1978 he was appointed to the University of Vienna and was at the Institute for Byzantine Studies (later Institute for Byzantine and Neo-Greek Studies) initially university assistant, then senior assistant and in 1985 university lecturer for Byzantine studies and medieval history of Armenia and Georgia.

In 1988 he became assistant professor, in 1994 tit. Ao. Univ.Prof. and from 1997 to 2007 he was finally Ao. Univ.Prof. for Byzantine Studies and Medieval History of Armenia and Georgia with the professional title of University Professor . From 2000 to 2006, Seibt was also Vice-Director of Studies in Classical Studies at the University of Vienna, with primary responsibility for the Byzantine and Neo-Greek studies.
