After the Second World War, Enepekides worked at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate in 1946 and his habilitation in 1950 . As a private lecturer (since 1960 as adjunct professor) he gave courses on Byzantine and Neo-Greek studies. In 1974 he was appointed head of the Neo-Graecist department at the Vienna Institute for Byzantine Studies and an associate professor. In 1982 he retired. The continuation of the subject of Neo-Greek Studies was secured by the university management appointing Gunnar Hering as a full professor of the subject.

The focus of his research was the history of the Greeks since the Middle Ages (especially since the 19th century). He published numerous documents from Greek history for the first time.
