Dublinia
The Dublinia is a museum of contemporary history in the form of a non-profit visitor center in Dublin , Ireland . Its focus is on the time of the Vikings and the history of Dublin in the Middle Ages . Dublinia is housed in part of Dublin's Christ Church Cathedral , also known as the Synod Hall.
The Dublinia features historical reenactments with costumed actors in the roles of the Vikings and medieval Dubliners and encourages visitors to join in. It features replicas of Vikings and medieval market scenes, buildings and streets.
The exhibition opened in 1993 and completely revised in 2010 for 2 million euros. The museum is visited by over 125,000 visitors a year.
It essentially consists of three floors. The lower floor tells the history of Dublin at the time of the Vikings, the middle floor shows the development of the city in the Middle Ages and the upper floor presents the possibilities of archeology and science for the reconstruction of historical facts. The museum has a small cafeteria and a souvenir shop. Interested visitors can also climb up St Michael's Tower after the exhibition to take a look over Dublin's rooftops.
