Dubsmash is an app for Android and iOS with which it is possible to combine a video in the form of a selfie with famous quotes, animal noises or other sounds.

Functionality

All usable tones, also called "sounds", are uploaded by users and can in turn be freely used by other users.

To create a video, the user must first select the category from which the sound is to be used. After selecting the desired sound, a video window opens in which the front or rear camera can be selected. Clicking on Start starts the playback of the sound and the user moves their mouth synchronously with the sound. After recording, the user can view the dub and then save it, share it with other people or record it again.

In addition to the sounds provided, it is also possible to use your own sounds from your smartphone without having to upload them.

history

The app was developed by the Berlin start-up Mobile Motion , which was founded in May 2013 . Two of the three founders (Roland Grenke and Jonas Drüppel) got to know each other through their joint studies at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management . Through previous projects, the company already has investors who support the financing of the app.

According to the company, the idea for the app came about in the office, inspired by the nipple board from TV total . The developers call the app a "logical continuation of it" .

The first version for Android was published in the Google Play Store at the end of October , the first version for iOS followed on November 18, 2014.

Reactions

In the press, the app is described as “the coolest app of the year” or “maybe the best time waster of the year” .

Just five weeks after the Android version was released, the app was downloaded between one and five million times. Ten days after its release, the app took first place in the iTunes charts.

According to media reports, 100 million people from 192 countries worldwide had downloaded the app by June 2016. Presenter Jimmy Fallon and guest Penelope Cruz used the app on the US talk show Tonight Show .

Copyright Infringement

The media warn of possible copyright violations , which the user can commit by sharing the dub , as the uploaded sounds are used without the consent of the rights holder. If the videos created are only sent in a private environment, this is a private copy , which is legally harmless.

However, it becomes problematic when a video is published on platforms such as YouTube or Facebook , because the videos are no longer within a private framework due to the public or the often high number of friends and it is no longer possible to refer to a private copy.
