Dukan Diet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dukan Diet is a diet that was developed by French nutritionist Pierre Dukan in the late 1970s. The diet approach is based on a protein-rich diet (animal and vegetable protein) with as little carbohydrates as possible (rice, potatoes, alcohol, sugar, etc.) and a dedicated restriction in fat intake.

classification

The Dukan Diet differs from many other forms of diet, which tend to recommend a low-calorie diet with smaller portions. Historically, it is one of the so-called low-carb diets, which have experienced an upswing since the mid-1990s. Such a ketogenic diet is primarily about avoiding carbohydrates as much as possible. The Englishman William Banting published his book Letter on Corpulance as early as 1874 .

Diet rules

With the Dukan diet there is no need to “ count calories ”. It consists of four phases in which 72 protein foods and 28 types of vegetables can be combined and eaten in unlimited quantities. This is believed to be helpful for obese people who are used to eating rather large amounts of food.

The so-called "attack phase" lasts about 1 to 10 days. Only 72 types of lean, protein-rich foods are allowed at this stage, plus 1½ tablespoons of oat bran per day. The aim is to reduce weight quickly. In the “build-up phase”, 72 protein-rich foods and 28 types of vegetables are allowed. Pure protein days and protein vegetable days are held alternately. The daily amount of oat bran is increased to two tablespoons. In the "stabilization phase ", the so-called yo-yo effect should be prevented. The plan is 2 ½ tablespoons of oat bran per day, and the 100 already known foods are allowed: 2 slices of wholemeal bread, 40 g of hard cheese, a piece of fruit.

In the permanent "maintenance phase", all foods are allowed again. However, in the best case scenario, a new attitude towards eating should have developed in the previous phases of the diet, which results in maintaining the achieved weight. In addition, a strict protein day similar to that in the first phase is recommended on one day of the week, which should stabilize the weight in the long term.

Assessment, risks

While some consider the low-carb diets to be "no more dangerous than other" diets, the Dukan diet is one of the worst diets according to the British Nutrition Society. Pierre Dukan lost his medical license in 2014.

The increased intake of protein can make the diet dangerous for people with weak kidneys. In addition, it is not recommended for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, diabetes I and II and heart problems.
