from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neath and Brecon Railway was a British railway company based in south-west Wales .

The company was founded on July 20, 1862 as the Dulas Valley Mineral Railway . The plan was to develop the area between the villages of Neath and Onllwyn in the Dulas valley by building the Neath – Onllwyn railway line .

On October 2, 1864, the company changed its name to Neath and Brecon Railway after receiving the concession to continue building to Brecon . There was a transition to the Brecon and Merthyr Tydfil Junction Railway . In 1865, the Progress, the first Fairlie locomotive, was used.

On June 3, 1867, the Onllwyn – Brecon to Brecon line opened . On July 26, 1869, the company took over the Swansea Vale and Neath and Brecon Junction Railway , with which there was a connection in Colbren Junction. In addition, she received route usage rights over the Swansea Vale Railway to Swansea . At the same time, however, it had to grant the Swansea Vale Railway route usage rights over its entire network. The rights went to the Midland Railway in 1874 . At the same time, the Neath and Brecon Railway leased its route network to the Midland Railway. With the Railways Act 1921 , the company was added to the Great Western Railway from January 1, 1922 . The Midland Railway was taken over by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway , and they used the rights until circa 1930 when the lease ended.

The route was closed as part of the Beeching ax in 1962/1963. On July 1, 1964, the section Neath to Onllwyn was put back into operation to ensure the connection of a mining operation.
