Dún Eochla

Dún Eochla [ duːn oːxlə ] is a stone fort on a hill in the middle of the Aran Island of Inishmore in County Galway , Ireland . The construction date of the relatively complete circular fortification is unknown, but the Dún probably dates from the late Iron Age or the early Middle Ages (550-800 AD)

It was built from two rows of walls, the inner one being about five meters high and 3.5 meters thick. The stones placed inside the fortress are from the restoration in the 19th century.

A small heritage park has been established around Dún Eochla, which shows some characteristic elements of the Aran Islands. Dún Eochla is located south of the village of Eochaill, after which it is named. Eochaill means yew wood. Nearby are the remains of a lighthouse from the early 19th century. It is one of seven stone forts in the Aran Islands.
