The Dunckers barbel ( Barbodes dunckeri , Syn . : Puntius dunckeri , Barbus dunckeri ) is a freshwater fish from the carp family (Cyprinidae). Their distribution area is on the Malay Peninsula and Singapore . The species was named in honor of the ichthyologist and former director of the Natural History Museum Hamburg Georg Duncker .

features

Dunckers barbel becomes 13 centimeters long. Their body shape is flattened laterally, elongated and corresponds to that of most other Barbodes species. Their back is yellow-brown to red-brown in color and has a greenish shimmer, the sides of the body are golden-yellow and show four large green-black to blue-black spots. The ventral side is orange, the gill cover brass-colored. The fins are yellowish to reddish, with the outer areas being stronger, more wine-red or purple in color. Males have a larger dorsal fin and are more strongly colored than the smaller females, with more reddish colors at spawning time. Older females ready to spawn are often very misshapen. Dunckers barbel becomes sexually mature with a length of eight to ten centimeters.

The species lives in rainforest streams with acidic water.

Aquaristics

Young fish from Dunckers Barbe are sold in Germany as clown barbel under the false scientific name of Puntius everetti . Barbodes everetti , however, is a different, similarly drawn but only half as long barbel species from Borneo. Dunckers barbel differs from Barbodes everetti by the shorter barbels , the larger number of scales in a transverse row and a smaller third, unbranched fin ray in the dorsal fin.
