Gustav Wenk (born March 31, 1884 in Augst , † March 13, 1956 in Riehen ) was a Swiss politician ( SP ).

biography

Gustav Wenk, son of a farmer, trained as a primary and secondary teacher and practiced this profession in Basel. He was also politically active as a member of the Social Democratic Party. From 1914 to 1925 he sat on the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt . In 1918 he was sentenced to prison as one of the leaders in the general strike . However, this did not affect his political career: from 1925 to 1953 he was a member of the government and from 1935 to 1956 he also represented his canton in the Council of States , which he presided over in 1948/49. In 1949 he was supported by the University of Basel to the Dr. phil. appointed hc . In memory of him, a train composition of the SBB type SBB RABDe 500 034-4 (ICN) was named after him.

The grave of Gustav Wenk and his wife Lisette, b. Bieder, (1887–1958) is in the Bettingen BS cemetery .
