Dunfanaghy ( Irish : Dún Fionnachaidh ; meaning: "fortress of the blond warrior") is a place in County Donegal in the northwest of the Republic of Ireland . It is on the northwest coast of the county, on the western side of Sheephaven Bay . Dunfanaghy used to be a fishing port and trading center. At the 2016 census, the place had 298 inhabitants.

To the north of the village is Killahoey Beach, to the south of the village is Tramore Beach and New Lake . New Lake used to be a saltwater marshland that was transformed into a freshwater lake by human intervention during the First World War . This lake is now a protected area.

Horn Head is a peninsula that separates the place from the Atlantic Ocean.

The town center is characterized by the market house built in 1847 and the quay built in 1831. Grain used to be exported from this port facility.

Attractions

There are four churches in the village:

  • Clondehorky Old Church (ruin)
  • Dunfanaghy Presbyterian Church
  • Holy Cross (Roman Catholic)
  • Holy Trinity (Church of Ireland)

There is also a golf club, several galleries and a museum in town. The Tomb portal by Errarooey Beg (Oirear Dhomhaí Beag) is located in Ballyboe between Falcarragh and Dunfanaghy.

On March 9, 1903, a railway line was opened, which connected the nine kilometers from Dunfanaghy Road station with Derry . In 1940 the railway line was closed to passenger traffic and completely closed on January 6, 1947.

Today a bus line connects the place with Letterkenny . The national road N56, a national secondary route , runs through the village. It connects the National Primary Route N15 at Drumlonagher near Donegal Town with the N14 in Letterkenny.
