Horn Head ( Irish : Corrán Binne; German: "mountain hollow") is a peninsula in County Donegal in the north of the Republic of Ireland .

Horn Head is north of Dunfanaghy on the north (west) coast of County Donegal and forms the west coast of Sheephaven Bay .

Nature reserve

On the Atlantic side of the peninsula, the cliffs of Horn Head rise almost vertically from the sea with a height of up to 180 m and represent an internationally important colony for breeding seabirds , including shags and razorbills . The cliffs have been designated or nominated by the Irish state as a Special Protection Area and European Bird Sanctuary .

Archaeological importance

Horn Head is home to numerous remains of Neolithic stone circles , court tombs and passage tombs along with prehistoric field markings.

The remains of two observation towers can be found on Horn Head, one from the Napoleonic Wars and the other from World War II. From both you have a view of the Atlantic and Tory Island .

On the side of the peninsula facing Sheephaven Bay is the Horn Head House . Erected in the 18th century, it was the largest building in the Dunfanaghy area at the time and the seat of the Stewarts of Horn Head until 1935 .

With McSwyne's gun there is a blowhole on the west side of Horn Head , through which the water is driven up to 90 m high with extreme noise during storms. Several people were killed in McSwyne's gun due to her carelessness .
