Dunham Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dunham Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Dunham Massey in the English county of Cheshire .

history

The castle is first mentioned in a document in 1173. The document says that Hamon de Massey ( Hamo de Masci ) owned the castles of Dunham Castle and Ullerwood Castle . There is also documentary evidence that the castle still stood in 1323. However, it was abandoned between 1323 and 1362.

Dunham Castle is often confused with Watch Hill Castle , a similar facility in the area, both believed to be owned by De Massey.

Dunham Castle was considered a Scheduled Monument but has been removed from the list.

construction

The moth presumably stood on a mound near what is now Dunham Massey Hall . It has a diameter of 24 meters and is still 2 meters high today. The property was surrounded by a moat that was later transformed into an ornamental lake.
