The house with a double courtyard is made of bricks in the Flemish bond with stone cladding. The roofs are covered with green slate . Major alterations were made around 1721. Most of the current mansion was built under the direction of John Norris in the years 1732-1740 for George Booth, 2nd Earl of Warrington .

In the years 1905-1907 the country house was modified by the architect Compton Hall. Until then, the south facade had eleven three-story bays . In order to make the building appear more in the style of the 17th century, the top floor of the 3rd, 4th, 8th and 9th yoke was replaced by an attic with dormer windows . In addition, in the 5th, 6th and 7th yoke, a center piece with columns on both sides of the central yoke and decorative stone gables were added. In 1917, during World War I , Penelope, Countess of Stamford offered the mansion to the Red Cross as a military hospital , and between April 1917 and January 1919 it became the Stamford Military Hospital . Hundreds of injured people were treated there. This included injuries from poison gas as well as gunshot wounds to the brain. The hospital was under the direction of Sister Catherine Bennett and Lady Stamford's daughter, Jane Gray, was trained as a nurse there.

Since March 1959, the English Heritage has listed the country house as a historical building of the first degree . It has been owned by the National Trust since 1976 . Around 340,000 visitors were counted in 2014. From March 2014 to 2016 the main sick bay ( called Baghdad ) of the Stamford Military Hospital, the operating room, the nurses' station and the recovery room were restored to commemorate the beginning of the First World War 100 years earlier.
