The Dunkeld Bridge is a road bridge in the Scottish village of Dunkeld in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1971 the bridge was included in the Scottish Monument List in the highest monument category A.

history

A previous structure existed at the site, which Alexander Mylne completed in 1510. Today's Dunkeld Bridge was built by Thomas Telford between 1805 and 1809 and replaced an uncomfortable ferry connection. The cost of construction was over £ 30,000. Designed as a customs bridge, the building was confronted with resistance from the residents from the start. The resistance intensified with the opening of the Dunkeld and Birnam railway station in the opposite village of Birnam in 1856. Since customs had to be paid for all goods delivered by rail on the way to Dunkeld, uprisings broke out in 1868 and the Royal Highlanders dispatched them to calm them down were. Customs shelters on the bridge were thrown into the river several times. In 1879 the customs duties were abolished.

It is the longest bridge Telford has ever built in Scotland. Until the relocation of the A9 in 1977, the important trunk road ran over the bridge. Today she runs the A923 .

description

The 209 m long masonry viaduct spans the Tay in Dunkeld with seven lined segment arches . The central as well as the two outer arches leading over land have the largest clear widths with 90 m each . From the central arch outwards, the clear widths decrease symmetrically to 84 m and 74 m respectively. Pointed icebreakers emerge from the pillars and continue along the pillars in outlets along the eight meter wide bridge.
