description

The beetle becomes 9 to 20 millimeters long. Like all species of the genus, it has a cylindrical body, an approximately spherical pronotum and, for a longhorn beetle, relatively short antennae. The antennae and legs are colored brown-red. In contrast to other species of the genus, the elytra are not clearly marked, but only with faded, spotty gray bands. Compared to the in this respect similar Xylotrechus pantherinus it can be distinguished by the angular protruding sides of the pronotum . The larvae are between 1 and 4 cm in size, depending on their age. The front edge of the pronotum is adorned on both sides by a mark in the form of the road sign for uneven roads, which is set off from the basic color of dark orange. The larvae are legless and have only one stem per side, the temple next to it is pigmented brown.

Occurrence

The species is distributed in the northern Palearctic from Europe via the Caucasus and Armenia, Turkey, northern Persia, Siberia and Korea to Japan. She avoids the Atlantic climate area. It is widespread in Central Europe.

Way of life

The larva develops over two years mainly in aspen and other species of the genus Populus, also in willow , maple, oak, walnut, linden, whitebeam, elm, chestnut, beech and birch , namely in trees that are dying or that have already fallen or felled. Strongly sunlit logs are preferred. In May, the larva pupates deep in the wood, sometimes even in a thick bark. The beetles sometimes appear in May, but mostly in June and July. The diurnal animals run around on their breeding trees or stay in their surroundings. They don't visit flowers.
