Beers come in different shades from whitish-yellow to black. For the sake of simplicity, a rough distinction is often made between light and dark beers , whereby the border between dark yellow and light brown lies in the range of amber colors, but is not precisely defined.

Beer color

The dark color of the beer depends less on the malt content and the original wort , but in particular on the color strength of the malt used, which can lead to a light yellow to deep black color of the finished beer, depending on the production process. In Germany and Central Europe, the color strength of malt and beer is measured in the EBC unit . A north German Pilsner usually has a color strength of around 3 EBC, while a Munich dark beer is more in the range of 40 EBC and a black beer or a stout can already be well over 100 EBC.
