EBC (beer)
The EBC ( European Brewery Convention ) unit describes the color (more precisely: the color strength) of beer and wort in Europe . Of the E uropean B rewery C fixed onvention value indicates how much light from a given beer wort content is absorbed.
The actual color of every beer is nothing more than a certain gradation of a certain shade of brown, which, with decreasing concentration, ranges from red, copper-colored and amber-colored to golden yellow and light yellow. The coloring power of brewing malt is also given in EBC; here the value indicates which color strength can be achieved with a certain original wort content with the relevant malt. However, in addition to the malt color and original wort content, the color strength of the finished beer also depends on many other factors such as the wort preparation , the pH value of the beer or the fermentation process .
In the USA the unit Lovibond (L), named after the British brewer Joseph Williams Lovibond, is used, with 1 L = 2.65 - 1.2 EBC or 1 EBC = 0.377 - 0.45 Lovibond.
