Duodenitis is acute or chronic inflammation of the lining of the duodenum (duodenum). In 2010, there was an average of 1.44 cases per 100 insurance years of gastritis and duodenitis that led to incapacity for work.

causes

There are different causes for duodenitis:

  • Infectious diseases of the rest of the intestinal tract with bacteria such as salmonella or shigella , viruses or amoeba . Long- lasting symptoms of the single cell Giardia have been described,
  • exposure to harmful substances such as alcohol or certain anti-rheumatic drugs ( NSAIDs ),
  • Shock, stress and central nervous system disorders as well
  • other diseases of the neighboring organs ( biliary tract , pancreas or stomach ).

Symptoms

The signs of inflammation are expressed in nausea, vomiting, pressure or stabbing pain, loss of appetite, digestive disorders and disorders in the autonomic nervous system .

diagnosis

The diagnosis is made based on the endoscopic and histological findings:

  • Normal findings: Often cases of incorrectly classified other diseases that were classified as "mild" or "chronic" duodenitis are also recorded here.
  • mild duodenitis with noticeable change in the number of plasma cells , edema (mostly with multifaceted intraepithelial infiltration ) and transformation ( metaplasia ) to gastric mucosa.
  • Severe duodenitis with varied changes and atrophy of the villi with a decrease in plasma cells - this can be an important indication of an ulcer disease .

therapy

Treatment for duodenitis is essentially about getting rid of the underlying causes, such as fighting infections or avoiding the NSAIDs, etc.
