The Durham University Observatory (German Observatorium der Universität Durham ) is a weather observatory owned and operated by the University of Durham . It is a Grade II listed building in Potters Bank, Durham . It was originally founded by Temple Chevallier in 1839 as an astronomical and meteorological observatory . Meteorological measurements were carried out at the beginning due to the need to calculate the refraction of the air with the air temperature . Until 1937 when the observatory focused exclusively on meteorological recording.
The observatory's current director is Professor Tim Burt of the Department of Geography, who is also a Masters from Hatfield College .
After the Radcliffe Observatory , Durham has the longest uninterrupted meteorological record of any university in the UK . The records are from the 1840s. Mainly due to Gordon Manley's work in creating temperature records that are comparable to Oxford's. Currently, the observatory is contributing to the Met Office's forecasts through automated recordings .
