Dystopia (Eng .: dystopia ) was a sludge band from Orange County , California.

Band history

Dystopia was founded in 1991 in the line-up of Dan Kaufman (vocals), Matt "Mauz" Parrillo (guitar), Todd Kiessling (bass) and Dino Sommese (drums) in Orange County (California). A first demo appeared in 1992 . Dan Kaufman, the group then played songs for two split - EPs one. It was only when Kaufman left in 1993 and Parrillo took over the vocals that these recordings were released on Misanthropic Records and Life Is Abuse. The vinyl EP Human = Garbage was released in 1994 with five new songs and Parrillo on vocals. The CD version turned out to be a kind of best-of, as all previously published recordings were pressed onto the CD. With the first recordings, the band also went on tour and played various shows in the United States. Further EPs were released and the group goes on two European tours.

In 1997, after Matt "Mauz" Parrillo and Dino Sommese moved to Oakland . In 1999, The Aftermath, another compilation with old recordings, was released. In the early 2000s, the group decided to go their separate ways. Between 2004 and 2005, Dystopia recorded their final album, but it wasn't released until 2008.

Music genre

The band describes itself as a doom-ridden, metal-laced, down-tuned punk with a "love earth - hate people" philosophy (dt about. Doom -geplagter, Metal -durchsetzter, down tuned Punk with a "love the earth - hate the people "philosophy). The texts up to 1997 are therefore very sarcastic and mostly deal with political issues. However, personal lyrics can also be found on the first albums in particular. The later albums focus more on human relationships.

Musically, the group moves in the sludge genre, that is, the music is very slow and borrows from Doom Metal . Especially at the beginning, influences of the grind and crust core can be seen, which later gave way to a more death metal-like sound.
