Location of the Dzanga Sangha Reserve Complex in the tri-border region of the Central African Republic , Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo

The Dzanga Sangha Sanctuary is located in the south of the Central African Republic near the Sangha River . Within the reserve is the Dzanga-Ndoki National Park , which consists of two separate sectors, Dzanga in the west and Ndoki in the south. The reserve borders the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo and the Lobéké National Park in Cameroon . The three states have jointly founded the Tri- National Conservation Area on the Sangha River (TNS), which includes the three national parks and the surrounding areas, which means that a total of 28,000 km² of rainforest are under protection in the region of the three-country triangle .

The average annual precipitation is about 1500 mm, the average temperature is between 24 and 29 ° C. The heaviest rainfall occurs in the long rainy season from October to November and in the short rainy season between May and June.

fauna

In the middle of the dense forests there are large clearings where numerous endangered large animals such as forest elephants , forest buffalo and bongos can be observed. Other large mammals in the area are western lowland gorillas , chimpanzees , leopards , golden cats , hippos , giant forest pigs , brush-eared pigs , bushbucks , sitatungas , various types of duiker, red colobus monkeys ( Colobus pennanti oustaleti ), black and white colobus monkeys , green baboons , monkeys .

Danger

After the coup by the Séléka rebels in March 2013 in the Central African Republic and the associated instability, the protection of the area could no longer be adequately guaranteed. In May 2013, 26 elephants were shot dead by poachers who entered the sanctuary. The Séléka troops are now cooperating with nature conservation organizations - such as the WWF - and are supposed to guarantee the safety of the reserve.
