history

Ernest Gallo and Julio Gallo founded the winery in 1933 shortly after the end of Prohibition in the United States . Over the years, the two brothers bought numerous wineries, notably in Sonoma County, California . Julio, who died in 1993, was responsible for making the wine and Ernest, who died in 2007, was responsible for sales. An early successful product was the Thunderbird , a mixed drink made from sweet white wine, alcohol and lemon juice with 21% alcohol. The price was low and 32 million gallons (121 million liters) were sold in 1957. Other Gallo wines include Turning Leaf , Twin Valley , Single Vineyard , Red Bicyclette, and Ecco Domani . They are neat, single- variety , but simple examples with no real character. Mass production at Gallo Winery has made American wine accessible and known worldwide. Gallo Winery also produces more prestigious lines that satisfy consumers with higher indulgence demands. The company is the largest exporter of California wine and imports wines from Argentina , France , Italy , New Zealand and Spain .
