The online database eAmbrosia the European Commission lists information about protected wines , spirits and food in the European Union on.

The eAmbrosia online database centralises all products protected by protected designations of origin or protected geographical indications and the “ traditional specialty guaranteed ” mark in a single database. The affected products - food, wine and spirits - have so far been collected in three different databases: E-SPIRIT-DRINKS, DOOR and E-BACCHUS. By merging the data from the previous databases E-Spirit-Drinks , DOOR and E-Baccus , the search is to be simplified and more transparency created.

Surname

Ambrosia ( ancient Greek ἀμβροσία ambrosía ) is translated as 'food of the gods'. The e in front of the word indicates the electronically accessible database for protected foods, wines and spirits.

history

The electronic database eAmbrosia replaces the previous three databases E-Spirit-Drinks , DOOR and E-Baccus . As of April 1, 2019, the information from the E-Baccus database was integrated, with July 2019 the information from the E-Spirit Drinks database and as of December 31, 2019 from the DOOR database (previously for origin-protected foods).

aims

The European Union's quality policy aims to ensure that the names of certain products are protected in order to promote their unique properties related to their geographical origin as well as traditional know-how. Product names can be given a "geographical indication" (see: Designation of Origin ) if they have a specific reference to a place where they are manufactured. Recognition as a geographically protected product enables consumers to trust and differentiate quality products, while helping manufacturers better market their products.

By replacing the previous three databases and combining them with the eAmbrosia database , an easily searchable and intuitively comprehensible database with a simple user interface is to be created. This new system simplifies the search for information about geographical indications and increases transparency for manufacturers, national authorities and all interested parties.

Technical design

The European Union's public and freely accessible database eAmbrosia is a register for geographical indications of food, wine and spirits. The database also shows the current status of such an origin-protected product (applied for, published or registered) including references to official protection. The database is divided into three sub-tabs:

  • Wine register
  • Register for groceries
  • spirits

If no sub-tab is selected, a search in the entire tab is possible. A detailed search mode enables the search to be narrowed down to certain countries, type of product, name of the product, product category (e.g. cheese, beer, salt etc.) as well as other special search queries.

In January 2019, when the database was fully operational, over 3300 products were listed.

Legal bases

For the legal basis for the protected designations of origin that can be found in the eAmbrosia database , see for example:

Third countries

The eAmbrosia database is already designed to include products from third countries that are protected in the EU. In January 2019, three products from third countries ( Mexico , Guatemala and Peru ) were listed: Tequila , Ron de Guatemala and Pisco .

In principle, bilateral and multilateral treaties on a global level provide protection for certain products between certain countries, as well as the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).

Switzerland

A special agreement between Switzerland and the European Union came into force on December 1, 2011, under which protected designations of origin in Switzerland are recognized in the European Union and vice versa. Switzerland has set up its own register of all recognized Swiss designations of origin at the Ministry of Agriculture.

United Kingdom

Even before Brexit, the government of the United Kingdom recognized the problems and disadvantages that could arise for domestic producers in this area and decided to set up their own system for geographical indications.
