BLS ex RM ABt 926 - B 508 - RBDe 566 226

The 8 electric railcars of the EBT group , which were delivered between 1973 and 1974, are called RBDe 4/4 . The RBDe 4/4 is the type designation and means four-axle electric railcar with a maximum speed of over 110 km / h, with four driven axles, with 2nd class seats and a luggage compartment.

The vehicles in the series were allocated to the individual companies in the books and numbered accordingly, but were used freely across the entire network of the EBT Group from the start. The six vehicles of the Emmental-Burgdorf-Thun-Bahn (EBT) were given the numbers 221–226, the vehicle of the United Huttwil-Bahnen (VHB) the number 261 and the vehicle of the Solothurn-Münster-Bahn (SMB) the number 281. With regard to the delivery of the RBDe 4/4 II , they were designated as RBDe 4/4 I from 1982 and later as RBDe 566 I (220-227). As a result of the mergers, they belonged to Regionalverkehr Mittelland from 1997 and to BLS AG from 2006 .

The RBDe 4/4 represent an intermediate stage in the development between high-performance multiple units , EAV multiple units and SBB RBe 4/4 on the one hand and the NPZ or private railway NPZ on the other. External features are the flush swing doors, the railcar only has one driver's cab and always operates with a matching control car, there are no longer any front wall doors for the transition to the reinforcement car. But technically it is still a conventional train, both electrically and in terms of car construction, where the principles of the standard car I are still visible in many ways. With these trains, the EBT Group abolished the first class, which it then reintroduced in 1992.

This was the first time that swivel and slide doors were used as exterior doors on a rail vehicle in Switzerland. The doors are released selectively by the engine driver and operated by the customer using push buttons. The door is closed by the engine driver from the driver's cab. The trains are also provided with a stop request function, which enables stop-on-demand stations to be operated without a train attendant being on board.

The railcars are equipped with an electronically controlled shooter control. The traction current is tapped at the step transformer and fed via the contactor control to a rectifier block, which in turn feeds the four shaft current traction motors. A SAAS lamellar drive is installed with a transmission ratio of 1: 3.95.

delivery

The first vehicle was delivered in July 1973 and presented to the press on August 21, 1973.

In 1973/74 8 trains were delivered, 6 of them for EBT and one each for VHB and SMB. There were also 4 intermediate cars for the EBT and 1 for the VHB:

  • RBDe 4/4 221-226, 261, 281
  • Bt 321-326, 361, 381
  • B 505-508, 555

In 1977 another 6 intermediate cars were delivered and an additional control car for the high-performance railcars :

  • B 509-510, 556-559
  • Bt 352

Renumbering and modifications

In 1991/92 the first class was reintroduced and the vehicles were given UIC numbers. In 2002, the similar railcars and control cars were combined into series, as the distinction between the former owner railways EBT / VHB / SMB was obsolete after the merger to form RM:

  • RBDe 566 221-226, 261, 281, from 2002 566 221-226, 220, 227 in that order
  • ABt 50 38 38-33 921-926, 961, 981, from 2002 921-926, 920, 927 in this order
  • B 50 38 29-34 505–508, 555–558, from 2012 B 50 85 29-35 505–508, 501–504 (only 502 and 503 renumbered and given a new BLS coat of paint)
  • AB 50 38 38-34 409, 410, 459 (459 became SR 89-34 803) The AB were originally B (509, 510 and 559). AB 409 and 410 were declassified in use from 2008, but still labeled as AB, until December 2010 as reinforcement cars from Lucerne, then as intermediate cars with RBDe 566 and ABt. The TSI numbers 50 85 39-35 509 and 510 as well as 89-35 591 were reserved, but were no longer attached to the vehicles.
  • ABt 50 38 38-33 952 bore the number 29-33 991 from 2002, as a conversion to a Bt (for reinforcement modules) was planned, but this was not carried out.

commitment

After delivery, the trains, mostly in two parts, but sometimes also in three parts, were used on the entire network. The additional intermediate cars were also used in other commuter trains and were used in pulled trains behind locomotives and baggage rail cars. After the merger with BLS, the operations were concentrated in the area of the former EBT and since December 2010 all eight trains were formed in three parts and in use between Thun and Solothurn. After delivery of the new BLS MUTZ double-decker trains, they will be replaced by NPZs in this operation and scrapped.

Discard and sale

  • ABt 50 38 38-33 952, from 2002 29-33 991 (as conversion to Bt was planned), sold to OeBB in March 2004 with BDe 576 250 and B 551 , from there to the Mirage Pendelzug association in December 2005, canceled in 2007.
  • RBDe 566 227-5, ABt 50 38 38-33 926-8 and AB 50 38 38-34 409-4 at the end of May 2013 for demolition in Emmenbrücke
  • RBDe 566 221-8 and ABt 50 38 38-33 921-9 stored in LUGO (reserved for the BLS Foundation), processed in Oberburg and since spring 2016 with the CJ , as a reserve pendulum Pruntrut – Bonfol . Still in the possession of the BLS Foundation, also marked with "BLS", can be fetched back if necessary.
  • RBDe 566 222 and ABt 50 38 38-33 922 transferred to the CJ on November 14, 2013 , where it was used as a reserve pendulum Pruntrut – Bonfol
  • RBDe 566 224, ABt 924 and B 506 on December 12 for demolition in Emmenbrücke
