From 1949 the energy industry in the Soviet occupation zone was organized into 5 energy districts. Among them, the Association of People's Own Enterprises (VVB) Energy District East (EBO) was responsible for supplying the districts of Dresden, Leipzig and Karl-Marx-Stadt. During a reorganization, a VEB Energieversorgung was founded for each district of the GDR. At the beginning of the 1970s, the VEB Energiekombinat emerged from this , including the Energiekombinat Ost based in Dresden.

After the fall of the wall, the company was converted into a stock corporation, in which, in addition to local authorities in the region, Energie -versorgung Schwaben AG and HEW Hamburgische Electricitäts-Werke AG were involved. In November 1990 the company name ESAG Energieversorgung Sachsen Ost AG was notarized. GASO Gasversorgung Sachsen Ost GmbH had previously been spun off. In 1991 the Gasversorgung Stadt Dresden GmbH and in 1992 the Dresden Elektrizität und Fernwärme GmbH were spun off. Public utilities were also formed elsewhere and separated their energy supply from ESAG.

In 2004 the umbrella company ENSO Energie Sachsen Ost was established, under which ESAG and GASO cooperated closely. The prerequisite was the decision of the municipal and private shareholders to form a regional energy service provider. At the beginning of 2006, ESAG and GASO change their names to ENSO Strom AG and ENSO Erdgas GmbH, respectively. In May 2008 ENSO Erdgas GmbH was merged with ENSO Strom AG, which was then renamed ENSO Energie Sachsen Ost AG. At the end of 2006, two network companies were separated from ENSO Strom AG and ENSO Erdgas GmbH in order to implement legal requirements for unbundling under company law. The merger of these two grid companies, namely ENSO Erdgas Netz GmbH and ENSO Strom Netz GmbH, resulted in today's ENSO NETZ GmbH after two changes of name.
