Brief description: | Qualitative classification of wall and ceiling colors |
Latest edition | 11.2002 |

The EN 13300 standard describes a qualitative classification of wall and ceiling colors . Its title is coating materials - water-based coating materials and coating systems for interior walls and ceilings .
As the DIN standard DIN EN 13300 , it replaces the old DIN 53778 .
The standard classifies the colors according to the intended use and type of binder and defines the following criteria for differentiation:
Contrast ratio (opacity)
- Class 1 = 99.5
- Class 2 = 98 ... <99.5
- Class 3 = 95 ... <98
- Class 4 <95
The division into the classes is based on the manufacturer's information on the coverage in m² / liter. Z. B. a contrast ratio of the following classes approx. A yield of:
- Class 1 - from 7 m² per liter
- Class 2 - 5 to 7 m² per liter
In practice, when buying a color, it is important to note that the manufacturer's specifications often deviate from the contrast ratio according to EN 13300. In case of doubt, you can trust a lettering Opacity : Class 1 according to EN 13300 . So this color will cover very well.
shine
The medium gloss category can still be described as semi- gloss and semi- gloss .
Designation reflection value
- Glossy = 60 (measuring angle 60 °)
- Average gloss <60 (measuring angle 60 °)
- Average gloss = 10 (measuring angle 85 °)
- Matt <10 (measuring angle 85 °)
- Dull matt <5 (measuring angle 85 °)
Maximum grain size
Differentiation criterion for the water-based coating materials for which the scope of EN 13300 has been extended.
The grain size is specified in micrometers (μm) and the purpose of use:
- Fine up to 100 μm - interior dispersion paints
- Medium up to 300 μm - brushable plasters
- Coarse up to 1500 μm - fine textured plaster
- Very coarse over 1500 μm - coarse textured plaster
Wet abrasion resistance
The wet abrasion resistance describes the cleanability (washing or scrubbing resistance) of wall paints and is a measure of the resistance to mechanical abrasion (e.g. when cleaning the surface).
According to EN 13300, it is divided into five classes. Class 1 designates the highest, class 5 the lowest wet abrasion resistance. Class 2 was formerly referred to as "scrubbing-resistant" according to DIN 53778, and class 3 as "washable".
The exact description:
- Class 1 <5 μm abrasion with 200 strokes
- Class 2 ≥ 5 μm and <20 μm with 200 strokes
- Class 3 ≥ 20 μm and <70 μm with 200 strokes
- Class 4 <70 μm abrasion with 40 strokes
- Class 5 ≥ 70 μm with 40 strokes
