The ESL One New York in 2017 is one of the ESL hosted a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament, which on 15 September 2017 to 17 September 2017 at the Barclays Center in New York took place. The eight participating teams played for a total of $ 250,000 in prize money. The winner of the tournament is the FaZe Clan . At the same time, a Street Fighter V tournament took place for the second time in a row , in which 256 players played for $ 50,000.

format

The eight participating teams were divided into two groups according to the world rankings, the mode was subsequently determined by the teams by vote. The group stage was played in a double-elimination system, with the opening game and the winning round being a best-of-one game, elimination games and the losing round being played in a best-of-three . The two best teams in each group were promoted to the play-offs, which were played in the usual single-elimination system. The semi-finals were decided by best-of-three games, the winner was determined by a best-of-five game in the grand finale.

SK Gaming lived up to its role as a favorite and was the first to secure a place in the playoffs. The second-placed team Cloud9 in the losers' round against Natus Vincere was able to clearly secure two cards for the semi-finals. Team EnVyUs lost 2-0 in the elimination game against Natus Vincere and was the first to be eliminated from the tournament.

In Group B, the FaZe Clan was able to convince clearly in two games and move into the semifinals, while Team Liquid had to go over three maps in the losing round against the better seeded Team Astralis in order to secure a place in the playoffs. Virtus.Pro had to admit defeat in the elimination game and say goodbye to the tournament.

In the first semi-final, Team Liquid was able to wrest the first win 22:18 in extra time on the first map from the Brazilian team SK Gaming , which had been playing without losing points until then . After the equalization, the decision had to be made in the third game, whereby the full distance of 30 rounds was necessary to determine a winner, the Americans were able to secure a place in the grand final with a 16:14 . The second semi-final was a clear matter for the last remaining European team, the FaZe Clan was able to convince clearly 16: 4 and 16: 3 against Cloud9 in two games and is thus also in the final. FaZe Clan is the only team in the tournament that was able to move into the final without losing a map.

The FaZe Clan kept their perfect statistics even after the grand finale. Already on the de_inferno map chosen by the opponent , the Europeans dominated 16: 3, on de_overpass there was tension again, but here too the FaZe Clan won 16:14 . FaZe finally took the opportunity to win the tournament already on map three - de_mirage - and defeated the Americans clearly with 16: 4 .

Trivia

The tournament was played with an outdated version of the game, as the last patch from Valve was only applied one day before the start of the tournament. As this patch contained significant changes to two pistols and the players had little time to prepare, it was decided to use an older version of the game for the tournament.

On the first day of the match there were internet problems in Brooklyn due to vandalism , so technical difficulties arose during the transmission.
